The word advent means ‘coming’ or ‘arrival’. The Christian season of advent is a season of waiting and preparing for God’s arrival into our midst. Advent is also two-fold: it is a season of waiting and preparing to remember and celebrate Jesus’ first advent, but it is also a season of waiting and preparing for Jesus’ second advent, when he will return to redeem and restore all things. In reality, our whole lives are a season of advent; waiting for Jesus to come again. In this time between Jesus’ first and second advents, God’s presence is not always obvious. This can often leave us wandering and lost. Through his scriptures, though, God calls us to behold, to pay attention, to look, and see that his presence is all around us, but often hidden by the surface facades of our world. Like a star twinkling in the night sky, we are called to behold, in the midst of the world’s darkness, the bright, shining light of our Lord Jesus Christ.
