Spring…And Envy…Are In The Air!
Spring is in the air! The sun is shining, south breeze is blowing, snow piles in the parking lots are melting, school’s out for the week, smiles abound…and…it’s time for appointment list watching. Yeah…spring is definitely in the air!
Scratching your head on that last one? Don’t feel bad…that’s kind of United Methodist Church (UMC) thing…more specifically a UMC preacher thing. It’s the time of year when any new appointments (assignments) of Missouri UMC pastors to UMC churches are announced. Click here to learn a little more about the UMC appointment process.
When new appointment announcements come out, I, and most of my clergy colleagues, check them out. Okay…Guess I should only speak for myself…This UMC preacher checks them out. When I recognize pastors or churches involved, I wonder why changes have been made, will it be a good match, how does my colleague feel about the change…pretty mundane stuff…Right?
But if I’m honest…deep down…sometimes I also wonder if maybe my name might have come up in the appointment decision conversation. I may wonder what my colleague has going for them that I don’t have to get a particular assignment. In my mind, I may even go so far as to say, “That could have…no…should have been me!”
Envy…it’s pretty much chronic for all of us…even in the church…even with pastors…even with this pastor. It’s just one way that I’m pretty good at “Sinning like a Christian.”
Whether in a room or online; where 2 or 3 are gathered…envy is right around the corner! But God has a cure our envy. The cure is for the church to be the church…the church as God envisions it to be…a community of self-giving love. Click here to listen to more (March 9 sermon).
“Love…rejoices in the truth…” (1 Corinthians 13:6, NRSV).
So this spring I’m going to try a different approach. Instead of all that wondering, when I’m scanning the new appointment lists, I’m going to try rejoicing for/with my colleagues in their new pastoral assignments. Thinking it’s a step in the right direction of making envy take a back seat in my life. Care to join me?
Yours on the Journey,
