Time To Decide…

It’s one of the first songs I can remember singing as a little kid in church.  Then, as now, it’s an easy song to sing:            “I have decided to follow Jesus; I have decided to follow Jesus; I have decided to follow Jesus…No turning back, no turning back.”

But following Jesus is not always as easy as it sounds.  Jesus said it this way, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” (Matthew 16:24, NRSV)

Holy Week is a good reminder to us “would be” followers of just how much of a challenge it really is.  As we begin the week with Jesus, the crowds celebrate his arrival in Jerusalem and his “rock star” status.  Over the next few days it becomes clear that Jesus’ idea of living for God is very different from others…including many who praised him the Sunday before.

“The world behind me, the cross before me; the world behind me, the cross before me; the world behind me, the cross before me…No turning back, no turning back.”

On Holy Thursday, things really begin to swing; Judas betrays Jesus, he’s arrested, the disciples all abandon him, and Peter denies him three times.  On Good Friday Jesus is condemned to death, walks the road to Golgotha, is crucified, and dies.

“Though none go with me, still I will follow; though none go with me, still I will follow;  though none go with me, still I will follow…No turning back, no turning back.”

On Holy Saturday, we watch, wait, and wonder…Is it still worth it…this following Jesus?

“Will you decide now to follow Jesus? Will you decide now to follow Jesus? Will you decide now to follow Jesus…No turning back, no turning back.”

Holy Week is a reminder that following Jesus is rarely a slam dunk…but I still say “yes!”  You?

Your partner on the journey,

Pastor Steve
